A heartwarming Welcare BBQ brought together current residents, care leavers, and staff in a powerful celebration of belonging, support, and growth — with special moments that captured the essence of our mission.
Old Friends, New Memories: A Welcare BBQ Celebration

This Bank Holiday Monday, our Eastmoor and Bentleigh homes came alive with warmth, joy, and delicious food as we hosted a truly special occasion — our community BBQ.
From the moment guests arrived, the atmosphere was electric. Laughter echoed through the gardens, and the aroma of freshly grilled food set the stage for a day of connection and celebration. Tables were decorated with handmade touches from the young people themselves, showcasing their creativity and pride in their home.
Special occasions like this one are more than events; they are reflections of our purpose at Welcare. They bring together young voices, honour care leavers’ journeys, and nurture our shared sense of belonging. The BBQ wasn’t just a one-off celebration; it was a testament to the ongoing relationships, values, and care that define life at Welcare.
It was also an opportunity for staff to step back and simply enjoy the company of those they support — sharing jokes, taking photos, and recognising the everyday progress made by each child and young person. Moments like these remind us why we do what we do, and how powerful genuine community can be.

A Family Reunion That Meant the World
One of the most touching moments of the day was a heartfelt family reunion — not of blood, but of bonds built in care. A former resident returned to reconnect with old housemates and share his journey since leaving residential care. There were tears, hugs, and long chats that picked up right where they had left off, as if no time had passed at all.
Now studying independently at college and managing life on his own, he spoke candidly about how Welcare’s nurturing environment and structured guidance gave him the skills and confidence he needed to transition into independent living. From help with daily routines to emotional encouragement, he said every bit of support had helped shape his path.
He made a special point to thank the staff — several of whom were visibly moved — for their unwavering belief in him during the tough times. He even shared a few laughs about shared memories in the home, reminding everyone of the enduring spirit of friendship and resilience that continues to thrive.
His story is just one of many success stories we celebrate — living proof that our relationship with young people doesn’t end when they leave our homes. It evolves, deepens, and becomes part of the greater Welcare story: one where every young person has the opportunity to thrive long after their time in care.
Welcoming New Faces with Open Arms
The day also marked a milestone for our newest resident, who met others in the Welcare family for the first time. From the outset, there was an ease and joy in their interactions that made it seem like they’d been friends for years. Their instant connection – “like a house on fire!” – captured exactly what our homes strive to achieve: safety, inclusion, and friendships that last.
The new resident was welcomed with genuine warmth, invited into games, and soon laughing along in the garden as if they had always belonged. Staff noticed the transformation — from quiet curiosity on arrival to confident engagement by the end of the day. It was a powerful example of how our nurturing environments create space for trust, connection, and the building blocks of community.
Moments like these demonstrate how Welcare helps young people feel seen and supported from the very beginning of their journey with us.
More Than Just a Meal
Beyond the sizzling BBQ (prepared lovingly by staff), the garden was buzzing with laughter and joy. Residents played games like rounders and garden Jenga, shared uplifting news about school achievements and personal milestones, and even posed for a spontaneous photoshoot filled with silly faces and playful poses.
There were cuddles with our home kittens, adding a gentle sense of comfort and companionship, and fireside-style chats about life after care, where residents asked honest questions and shared their hopes for the future. Staff members joined in with equal enthusiasm, helping flip burgers, referee games, and capture candid moments on camera.
It was an afternoon bursting with connection — where the lines between staff and residents blurred in the best possible way, creating a relaxed, respectful, and genuinely joyful environment. These countless moments of light-hearted fun reminded us how vital community events are to our young people’s wellbeing and sense of identity.
Our Values in Action
Every element of the day — from the welcoming atmosphere to the openness of the conversations — showcased Welcare’s values in action. These special occasions aren’t simply about gathering; they are designed intentionally to support and affirm every young person in our care.
They provide a lived example of the empathy, respect, and encouragement that we strive to embed in our daily practice. From staff listening intently to young voices sharing their stories, to care leavers mentoring newer residents with a mix of wisdom and humour, each interaction reflected our commitment to genuine, empowering relationships.
Special occasions like this:
Reinforce positive relationships between residents and care leavers, helping to build trust, continuity, and a shared sense of community.
Celebrate young voices and personal growth by giving space for young people to share their achievements, dreams, and reflections.
Encourage emotional connection and resilience by creating a joyful, supportive setting where vulnerability is met with compassion.
Offer opportunities to reflect on progress in a safe, non-clinical environment — allowing both staff and residents to acknowledge how far they’ve come.
Events like these turn our values from words into actions. They ensure that each young person not only feels cared for but deeply valued as part of something bigger than themselves.
Why These Gatherings Matter
In residential care, every positive memory counts. Special occasions and community events help residents feel grounded, uplifted, and seen. These moments allow young people to relax, express themselves, and experience joy in a safe and supportive environment — something many may have lacked in earlier parts of their journey.
They also serve as a valuable opportunity for learning and development in real-time. Young people get to practise communication, conflict resolution, kindness, and teamwork — not through formal instruction, but through meaningful interactions that are both natural and memorable.
Moreover, these events are essential in preparing for the transition to independent living. They teach the social and emotional skills needed to thrive outside of residential settings, while reinforcing the message that support doesn’t stop when formal care ends.
We’re proud of every child and care leaver who joined us — not only for how far they’ve come but for who they are becoming. Each gathering is a chapter in their personal story, woven with trust, laughter, and the quiet assurance that they will never walk alone.

Looking Ahead
This BBQ was more than a day of fun. It was a celebration of growth, belonging, and the power of community. At Welcare, we remain committed to creating these meaningful experiences that honour every young person’s story and celebrate every step forward.
As we look ahead, we’re inspired to build on the momentum of days like this — planning more inclusive events, exploring more creative ways to amplify young voices, and deepening our support for those transitioning out of care. Each future gathering will be shaped by the stories, feedback, and aspirations of the young people we serve.
We can’t wait to host more family reunions, share more uplifting news, and continue spotlighting success stories. To learn more about the values that guide everything we do, visit our About Us page. By encouraging peer support, communication skills, and confidence-building, these gatherings prepare young people for future interactions in broader society. They provide opportunities to learn soft skills like teamwork, listening, and celebrating others’ achievements.
Do these events happen often?
Current residents, former residents (care leavers), staff, and occasionally invited guests or family members depending on the nature of the event. We ensure all participants feel safe, included, and respected throughout.
What kind of stories are shared at these gatherings?
We celebrate a wide range of success stories — from academic achievements and employment milestones to personal growth journeys and acts of kindness. Everyone’s progress matters and is honoured.
Can I refer a child or young person to Welcare?
Absolutely. We welcome referrals from professionals, carers, and family members. Please visit our Make a Referral page to start the process. Our team will guide you every step of the way.
Can former residents stay in touch after leaving care?
Yes — many of our care leavers continue to stay connected with Welcare. We offer ongoing support and welcome them back for events, catch-ups, or even to mentor others. Some return to share their experiences with current residents, offering reassurance and practical advice. Others stay involved informally — popping in to say hello, celebrating milestones with us, or updating us on their progress in education or employment. These enduring relationships reflect the genuine care and connection that Welcare builds with each young person, lasting well beyond their time in residential care.
How do staff support these events behind the scenes?
Our team plays a vital role in planning, preparing, and facilitating each event — from organising food and games to offering emotional support throughout. Their involvement ensures the experience is positive, inclusive, and meaningful.
Are there therapeutic benefits to these gatherings?
Yes. Group events in a supportive environment promote emotional wellbeing, reduce feelings of isolation, and foster a positive sense of identity. They are aligned with our therapeutic care model.
Can children or young people suggest ideas for future events?
Definitely! We actively encourage residents to take part in planning. It empowers them, builds confidence, and ensures events are shaped by their interests and voices. Young people can suggest themes, help organise activities, contribute to decorations or music playlists, and even take on roles such as event hosts or photographers. This active involvement nurtures leadership, fosters collaboration, and makes each event more meaningful and personalised.
How can former residents mentor current ones?
Care leavers are welcome to share their stories, answer questions, and offer encouragement — creating powerful role models for those still in care. These exchanges are carefully supported by our staff, who ensure that both the mentor and mentee feel comfortable and valued throughout the experience. Mentorship can take many forms, from casual conversations and group discussions to more structured opportunities like workshops or panel events. This not only benefits the current residents by offering real-world insights and inspiration but also empowers the care leavers, giving them a sense of purpose and pride in the progress they’ve made.
How are safety and inclusivity managed during events?
Every gathering follows strict safeguarding protocols, including risk assessments, supervision ratios, and accessibility planning to ensure everyone can safely participate. Staff are briefed and trained to support the emotional and physical wellbeing of all attendees.
We also foster a culture of kindness and respect where every voice is heard. Whether it’s through clear ground rules, positive behaviour modelling, or inclusive activities, our team ensures that each young person feels seen, valued, and part of the group — no matter their background or stage in their journey.
