Children’s homes in the UK are designed to meet a wide variety of care needs. From short-term emergency placements to long-term therapeutic settings, each home is tailored to serve specific groups of children and young people. Understanding the differences helps professionals and families make informed decisions.
I- Mainstream Residential Children’s Homes

These homes offer general care for children with a wide range of emotional, behavioural, or social needs. They may be short-term or long-term placements, and typically support 3 to 6 children in a family-style setting.
II- Therapeutic Children’s Homes
Designed for children who have experienced significant trauma, abuse, or neglect. These homes incorporate structured therapeutic models (such as PACE or CBT) and have specially trained staff. Welcare homes follow this model.

III- Emergency Placement Homes

These provide short-term care for children needing immediate accommodation due to crises or safeguarding concerns. Staff must be highly responsive and trained to manage unpredictable emotional needs.
IV- Short Break/Respite Homes
Support families of children with disabilities or complex medical needs by offering short-term residential care either on a regular basis or during family emergencies.

V- Secure Children’s Homes

These are highly regulated settings for children who pose a significant risk to themselves or others, or who are placed by court order. They combine care with strict security and therapeutic services.
VI- Homes for Children with Disabilities
Specialist homes tailored to children with physical or learning disabilities. Staff receive additional training in communication methods, mobility aids, and sensory regulation.

VII- Step-Down or Semi-Independent Living Homes

For older teens (16+) preparing to transition into adult life. These homes focus on life skills, budgeting, cooking, and decision-making, while still offering a structured support network.
VIII- Parent and Child Assessment Units
Though not technically children’s homes under Ofsted’s residential care category, these units house both the child and parent to assess parenting capacity in a supported environment.

Each type of children’s home serves a different purpose but shares a common goal: to offer children a safe, supportive environment where they can heal, grow, and move toward a better future.
At Welcare, we specialise in therapeutic and trauma-informed children’s homes that meet the highest standards of care and emotional support.
